Pins or hand weights are a useful training aid for the karateka in developing strength whilst practising essential kihon techniques.

The pins vary in weight to suit the practitioner but should generally be of moderate weight with the emphasis placed of continuous repetition. The Pins can be constructed from sections of steel bar of appropriate length to not hinder the techniques being practice and are coated or bound to improve grip. Alternatively sets of hand weigths are available to buy of varying weights already coated for increased grip and protection.

Kihon with the pins is often practiced in set of anything from 20 to 100 techniques with sessions often amounting to several hundred or thousands of techniques. Many striking and blocking techniques can be practiced with focus heavily on correct form, stance, and execution.

Without the pins and the resistance they provide it is evident how much faster and more powerful the techniques of the karateka has become.
